It’s much better here than Russia. Too I can do side jobs with my other skills. Glad I don’t live there because of the government, but would love to visit.

What city was the plumber in because in some cities in California the rent is probably 5-10 times more. I'm not sure though. And there's no cheap rent- like you can't find a bargain in a US city because there's a housing shortage. The biggest city in Texas might be a better comparison to Moscow because rents would be cheaper.

30 years ago as a union carpenter in NYC I was making about $38 an hour. Add to that gold level family health insurance, quarterly vacation pay checks, annuity and a generous pension I now enjoy in retirement.

I don't.see why plumbers don't charge more in Russia unless maybe they are a dime a dozen. Because when a persons pipes are leaking and water is everywhere, or their toilet clogs people will pay any amount of money to make it stop!

Just for reference, a guy I know, just before he retired 7 years ago. Had been working permanent nights as a cleaner/janitor, for a large grocery distribution center in Jersey City. After 20 years service on the job, his salary was $26 an HOUR !!, with almost unlimited overtime available and 6 weeks paid vacation, free medical, ect. Holy Smolly !! Lol However, the cost of rental is astronomic. Also dont forget that the ruble is down -94% since 97 and the usd is up about +12% since 97. So yeah their groceries are cheaper, but their life savings are gone. Also factor things like electronics are not cheaper.

My friend, your calculation is not right! Prizes for food in the US is without sales tax! So you have to add another 20%! If you earn 6000 , you have to pay 2000 for income tax, at least 1000 for health insurance and if you have been in a college or university you have a student loan between 45to 85 thousand, that you have to pay off! In the end, the difference is not so big!

I'm Canadian and fine forget to factor in I make 6 times more than an average Russian. So I pay alot less. And the quality of food here is much higher.

Wal-Mart is a very popular store for grocery . We have a lot of Wal-Mart here in California. There are other favorites for specific departments....like Meat or a larger assortment of choices.

Pretty much nobody eats garlic in North America. If you went to small independent Asian-owned grocery stores, produce is actually a lot cheaper. Also keep in mind that income tax in CA for ~$100K per year is around 28% so take home pay would be substantially less. Obviously still better than Russia etc.

Price difference is also due to regulation on using pesticides, soil quality, fertilising, QA, etc Besides that, asceuropean I know that a lot of our produce is exported to the US, that instantly raises the price due to logistics and tax. And Alaska would be more expensive than Oregon, since it is not agricultural self-sustainable and is dependant to importing most goods by regional or global trade. If I want apples or Gouda cheese I would not pay as much as I do for a mango or imported Reese buttercups. It depends on location, just like the notion of freedom is variable per region….apparently 😉
